Meet The Team
Jako Schonken graduated from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2012 with a B. Tech in Environmental Management. While studying he did an internship at the De Beers diamond mine in Kleinzee, restoring the vegetation on the mine tailings.
He started working at Warren Petterson Planning in 2013 as an Environmental Consultant in the telecommunication industry.
In 2015 he started working at SEC where his work focused on Environmental Management, Environmental Impact Assessments, Water-Use License Applications, Air Emission License Applications, Waste License Applications, undertaking Screening and Feasibility Assessments and conducting soil/water sampling and site remediation work.
His role at SEC over the past few years has been as Lead Ground Penetrating Radar Technician and Team Coordinator. His roles include conducting underground utility scans using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and cable avoidance tools; project and team management; liaising with clients; marketing and quality control of reports and maps created.
He has conducted a large number of scans across the country and has successfully managed major underground utility mapping projects for big industrial projects such as the Chevron refinery in Cape Town, the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant and the SASOL petrochemical plant in Secunda. He has also overseen scanning projects for a number of very large retail centers.
Jako believes that underground utility detection is critical to any construction project where excavations are planned. He is intensely interested in GPR technology and thinks modern society’s critical dependence on the uninterrupted availability of telecommunications, power distribution, water/sewer networks and transportation systems has made services damage prevention a necessity.
His interests include hiking, diving, underwater photography and walking dogs.
